After our lovely vacation (boats! No work!) ended, I went to pick up my dog from his vacation time at his grandpa's house. Knowing my dog as I do, and knowing he hadn't seen me for a few days, I rang their doorbell and stepped back into the middle of the yard. In the grass. Away from their white carpet.
Submissive or excitment urination is not the same thing as housebreaking issues.
My dog is housebroken. Sometimes after he's not seen me for a while, he will pee all over himself, me, and any thing under him. I take it as a compliment. Most days he just grins and wags when I come home, but despite what I say about dogs not telling time the same way we do, he knows the difference between an eight hour work day and a few days vacation time. Thank goodness.
This is a hard concept to explain to people however. And their reaction contributes a lot to the dogs reaction.
In my case, this time, I was glad to see him also - very glad! Glad enough to not mind the pee dribbles. So I sat down in the grass and let him come to me and we both wiggled all over each other. If I had gone IN the house however, I would have probably ignored him for a few minutes till he calmed down just a little. The more excited I get - the more excited he gets. Odd but true.
And now, I'm leaving him for 8 hours again - heading back into the real world.
Vacation's over.....
