Class Happenings

Tonight is week five of our puppy class. I'm having such a good time with this class - I've been teaching here for almost three years now and when I look back over my paperwork I usually remember most of the dogs. Sometimes I pull out a class roster and I just smile all over. Some classes have a chemistry that 'gells'. I will tell these classes about week six, 'I'm not letting you graduate!' just because I enjoy them so much. There are other classes of course, that I go 'whew!' when they are done, but honestly, not many. Most are fun, most are very enjoyable, but all end at eight weeks.
Some people go on to train more, others come see me in the store, email me, keep in touch and others I never see or hear from again. Very sad. I've been giving people my email address along with my business card, and I'm thinking I'm almost ready to start giving out my blog address. Gulp! Scary thought! But - hopefully I will have some good information on here at some point for people. Or, at least entertain.

Last week in class we did the start of 'find it' by doing the hide the treat in your hand thing.

We also did a combination of come with leave which I always enjoy a LOT
-toys and treats! Leave the food! Leave the kitty! Leave the other dogs!! Come Come! Funny funny!

We worked on stay and we did push ups. I love puppy pushups - and so do the puppies. I never have been able to figure out why they like them - because if you had ever done them, you would realize, they are No fun at ALL!!

Hello Kate,
I stumbled upon your blog and been reading it. I adopted 2 shepherds (Brutus and Nero) about 2.5 years ago. They were about 3 or 4 months old. They were feral. No real human contact until they were found. When we picked them up they were very scared and shy. Even after all this time they would really not bother with human contact, especially the smaller of the 2. They are fine with other dogs, they never chewed they never accept food from strangers won’t even eat food if it’s on the ground not even bacon unless I give it to them. They won’t even eat popcorn. They only eat when I’m home or at night. They are highly prey driven. They have killed rats, a cat, moles, they caught a possum, raccoon and even killed and ate a rabbit. They never bit anyone. And they are loveable, funny and goofy with us. They don’t rush the door, but if we go camping and see deer or prey there off. I have been working with a trainer (funny her name is Kate too). We are using an E-collar. It stimulates them and lets them know Hey; I’m calling you back. It’s been working well for the prey drive. But for everything else treat and praise training for them works really well. Do you have any opinions on how I can balance theses dogs? I’ve been told that they may never be the well-rounded dogs I see other people have. That sometimes shyness is hereditary or learned behavior from the mother. Am I doomed? Sometimes I see sparks of moving forward then we go back again. It’s like just right there, but we just can’t reach it. I’ve worked so hard. I want them to be OK.

HI!
I'm glad to see you here!
Okay - what does your trainer say? Are you working in class or private lessons? Are they together all the time?
Not knowing the dogs, I'd say - yeah, you probably won't ever have the most social pups in the world, but.
Not knowing the dogs - my first suggestion would be taking them to different group classes. Alone. Socialize them by themselves with different dogs. Even if they already know the basic things that are taught in that classm they need to be apart, and they need to work alone with you. Pack mentality prevails there, I'm thinking.
Ask your trainer and see what she says, thinks, about that??
That would be step One. THEN we go on.

Yes, I have and do train them at time sepreately. Especially in the beginning. I started at Pet-Smart. (Loved my trainers there). I went with the boys more for social then training. And they knew that and altered it a bit for us. The trainer I have now, does one on one and group even group off leash walks. They do great but they really don't socialize with the pack, there just there. It's somewhat hard to describe. My trainer Kate feels that they will never ever forget the thrill of the hunt but we can only try to curb it. Even as we were going through our evaluation they altered dog training for these 2. It's so frustrating. I take them out often. They do get lot's of looks and people are fascinated by them. I'm just so exhausted working with them. I guess there is no easy fix. Training is forever.

Yeah. I'm sorry. I always tell people 'dang, I left my magic wand at home today!!' There is no quick fix. Even on tv - what they show in fifteen minutes, took days and weeks to get to. Nothing happens immediatly - well, happens and Sticks immediatly.
Reinforcing, over and over, is key...
